On Monday 13th January, Wairoa A&P Society committee met to discuss whether the A&P Show will go ahead at the end of this week. As you will all be aware, ‘Summer’ hasn’t arrived in Wairoa and our district received an incredible amount of rainfall during December and January. This has made it extremely difficult to prepare the Showgrounds for our annual show, and it is still very wet in there.
Last week, Rodeo made the tough decision to cancel their competition due to the wet grounds. After this weekend’s working bee the call was made by the shearing committee to move their competition out to Kauhouroa Station. This is due to a couple of reasons:
The wet ground means it will be challenging for stock trucks to get sheep into the A&P Showgrounds without getting stuck. With another wet forecast looming there is nowhere undercover to hold the sheep at the grounds should it rain.
Both of these competitions are well known and loved by all that come to our show. Without these attractions, not enough people come through the gate to make it worthwhile for Trade Exhibitors and Entertainment.
Sadly because of this, the decision has been made to cancel the rest of our A&P Show.
Equestrian section will still hold their competition, with the possibility this moves offsite as well. Shearing will run the speed shearing Friday night and Show Shearing Saturday at Kauhouroa Station, Tiniroto Road.
Both of these events will be open to spectators and we would love to see you there.
We’ve been looking forward to putting on this event for you all, and this isn’t the update we were wanting to provide this week.
