National Young Horse Jumping Championships

How to breed Champions
Wednesday, 9 February 2011

<p class="MsoNormal">The new time slot, new committee and new sponsors all
combined to make the Global Performance Horses NZ Young Horse Championships
2011 an occasion to celebrate. A growing interest in breeding show jumpers in <st1:country-region><st1:place>New
Zealand</st1:place></st1:country-region> was evident with the numbers in the
classes.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Global Performance Horse got behind the show as main naming
right sponsors. A free service valued at $2500 to their top jumping Holsteiner
stallion COROFINO II the prize for the winner of the Broodmare class..</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The show was first held in 1996 and has grown since to
become one of the major shows of the season with 243 horses competing. Over the
years we have watched such stars as Dunstan Delphi win their way through the
age classes at this show – and look where they are now!</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">John Vallance, Australian International course designer, set
the courses for Corofino II Ring one, which <span style="mso-spacerun:yes">&nbsp;</span>provided some interesting challenges for the
riders. The first day saw clear rounds from only 13 of the 35 four year olds,
18 of the 46 five year olds, 20 of the 33 six year olds and six of the 12 seven
year olds.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Farmlands Ring Two courses were designed by Murray Graham
from <st1:place><st1:placename>Hawkes</st1:placename> <st1:placetype>Bay</st1:placetype></st1:place>.
<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">&nbsp;</span>Marilyn Vincent, set the tracks for the East
Coast Performance Horses Show Hunter Ring. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight:normal">The National Titles
for the four, five, six and seven year olds</strong></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The four-Year-Old Championship was sponsored by EVERTON
LODGE who promote the stallions Lux Z and Ricardo Z in <st1:city><st1:place>Auckland</st1:place></st1:city>.
The four year olds are the real babies of the show and often the first time the
progeny of a new stallions are seen. This year 19 of the original 35 starters
lined up for the final which for the first time this year included a panel of three
judges who allocated final placings on jumping style in a jump off round on the
final days competition. There were six horses with clear rounds over the three
days who went into the final round.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The style proved a major influence in the outcome and was a
bit controversial when 2nd placing was awarded to <st1:city><st1:place>Lucca</st1:place></st1:city>
with Catherine Cameron with four faults in the jump off over three other horses
that were clear in the jump off. The clear winner of the style and the 4-Year-Old
Championship therefore was Mr. Wiggle with <st1:personname>Kim Best</st1:personname>.
Mr. Wiggle is a bay gelding by Voltaire II out of Gabrielle by Distelfink. He
was bred by <st1:personname>Kim Best</st1:personname> and Maling Dillon. Mr.
Wiggle is also a half brother to Kim’s very good 6-year-old Giggles.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Barkers Ventures<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">&nbsp; </span>in
association with series sponsor ASTEK STUD sponsored the Five-Year-Old
Championship. Barker Ventures chose this show to launch a new initiative
importing European horses to NZ for competition and breeding in association
with Phillip &amp; Sally Steiner. The winner of the title was Schweppes LC with
Kyle Timm who made their debut last year in the four Year Old Championship
placing fifth. Schweppes is a 5-year-old chestnut stallion by Lindberg Des
Hayettes out of the TB mare Muchacha by Omnicorp and was bred by owners LC
Horse Farm.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">In the jointly sponsored GLOBAL PERFORMANCE HORSES &amp; MITAVITE
6 Year Old Final, Annandale Branson MVNZ with rider Philip Steiner were the
only ones double clear out of 22 that qualified for the final round. The
combination had previously won the 4-Year-Old Championship at the 2010
Championships. Annandale Branson MVNZ is a chestnut gelding by Pico Bello out
of Purple Reign by Moon Spirit bred by Mount View Sport Horses and owned by Gary
Hogg whose company Kiwi Span sponsors the national Junior Rider series. Sitting
behind Annandale Branson were eight horse &amp; rider combinations with four
faults on second equals.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The CUSHIONRIDE seven year Old Series although a smaller
class at only seven competing on the final day, was exciting when young Jake
Lambert came through with the only double clear of the round on Quality NZPH, a
bay gelding by Frisbee Kerellec out of Katie by Ramirez and bred by NZ
Performance Horses in <st1:place><st1:placename>Hawkes</st1:placename> <st1:placetype>Bay</st1:placetype></st1:place>.
Cushionride were a generous sponsor putting sponsorship money into the show as
well as the series. This class is always a good indicator as to potential.
While the seven Year Old classes are smaller by comparison to the earlier age
groups, these horses are the cream that have risen to the top and always seem
to go on to better things.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight:normal">Longspring Stud Style
Prize Winners</strong></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The show has always had a style prize judged on the second
day of competition. This year LONGSPRING Stud in the Wairarapa sponsored the four
Style Prizes – one for each of the Age Championships. The winner of the 4-Year-Old
Style prize was the eventual National Champion in Mr. Wiggle with <st1:personname>Kim
Best</st1:personname>. This was a particularly happy win as Longspring Stud
stood Distelfink, the grandsire of Mr. Wiggle at their stud. The winner of the
5 Year Old Style prize was Riviere Rouge LC with Kyle Timm, a bay stallion by
Lindberg des Hayettes bred by LC Horse Farm. The winner of the 6 Year Old Style
Prize and 2nd = in the National Championship was LC Telepathy a grey
stallion by Telegraph and again bred by LC Horse Farm and ridden by Kyle
Timm.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">&nbsp; </span>The winner of the 7 year old style
prize was Ngahiwi Cupid <span style="mso-spacerun:yes">&nbsp;</span>bred by Ngahiwi
Stud with Molly Bennett riding – the combination also finished 2nd
in the Championship class. The overall winner of a free service to any stallion
standing at Longspring Stud was then awarded to <st1:personname>Kim Best</st1:personname>
&amp; Mr. Wiggle for the best performed (winner) in her Age Final class.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight:normal">Global Performance
Horses Led Sport Horse Section</strong></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">This section was held for only the third time this year, but
with the added incentive of winning a free service to Corofino II, the
broodmare class swelled to more than 20 starters on the day! The classes were
held on the Sunday over lunch in front of the main crowd. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal">With all eyes focused on the service fee to international
jumping stallion COROFINO II who is owned by Global Performance Horses and is jumping
this season with Adrian Bruce, 20 mares entered. The eventual winner was
Bublitz Estate Romariz, the 5-year-old bay mare by Ramirez out of Chrialka
Redwood by Chrialka Zibu. She is a registered warmblood owned and bred by <st1:personname>Tracey</st1:personname>
Bublitz of Bublitz Estate.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Classes were also held for three, four &amp; 5 year olds
culminating in an overall Champion Led Sport Horse won by Bruce Wayne with
handler Vicki Prendergast. Bruce Wayne is a 5-year-old grey Holsteiner cross by
frozen semen sire Corland (VDL) out of Sanderston by San Mellay and was bred by
Michael &amp; Vicki Prendergast.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight:normal">Astek Stud Sponsors
Lunch a great success!</strong></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">One of the main attractions of this show is that it appeals
directly to the grass roots of show jumping. Those attending have a real chance
to display up and coming horse talent and the talk is always about breeding,
bloodlines and the current crop of foals. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal">With this in mind, Kaye Williams, Merran Hain and Shirley
Morris organized a sponsors lunch on the final day and invited the riders and
spectators to join with the committee and sponsors in the Charisma Hall. Astek
Stud who are national sponsors of the 5-Year-Old Age series agreed to help
sponsor this very important function! The food was top quality and was sponsored
by <st1:city><st1:place>Hereford</st1:place></st1:city> prime beef; <st1:place>KEW</st1:place>
wine and Leaderbrand produce. Merran Hain was also responsible for organizing
and part sponsoring the highly successful Saturday night BBQ that again
featured <st1:city><st1:place>Hereford</st1:place></st1:city> prime beef and
Leaderbrand produce.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight:normal">East Coast
Performance Horses Show Hunter Classes</strong></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-NZ" style="color:black;mso-ansi-language:EN-NZ">For
the first time, the Show Hunter section was cut back to one day instead of two
so as not to conflict directly with the Rotorua A&P Show held the same
weekend. Judges Cathie Forde (NHB) and Marilyn Vincent (Waikato) judged Age
group and Championship classes for the four, five, six&nbsp; and seven year old
show hunters, the days competition also included classes for Open, 1st
Year Registered, Junior and Amateur Show hunters – all earning valuable points
toward qualifying for the Horse of the Year which saw horse numbers up for this
section. The section was sponsored by East Coast Performance Horses a new
breeding operation set up by Craig, Jenny and their daughter Nicki in the
Wairarapa who are breeding with frozen semen using top local mares. Judges and
spectators were all impressed with the high standard of competition and turnout
of both horses and riders.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The NZ WARMBLOOD ASSOCIATION have traditionally sponsored
the four year old Show Hunter Championship which this year was won by Double J
Patience a chestnut mare by Repicharge – Rethink by Kingdom Bay and bred by
Robyn Jacobs with Oliver Edgecombe riding;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The other EAST COAST PERFORMANCE HORSES Show Hunter Championship
titles went to the five year old Madagascar, a brown mare by Orame – Sanscrit and
bred by JJ and LS Olphert and ridden by Lucy Olphert; the 6 year old
Meersbrooke Viva La Vida, a bay g by Meeresbrooke Iced Ripples – Last Chat by
Back Chat bred by Meersbrooke Stud and ridden by Trudi Biggar; and the seven
year old Zoombini a bay gelding by Craighaven Big Easy – Violet bred by
Craighaven Stud and ridden by Janet Eggleton.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight:normal">Other Special Awards
– Breeders, Rider and Turnout</strong></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">As a show based on showcasing the breeding industry, there
were a number of other awards giving recognition to the breeders who don’t
often share the limelight with their horses! FARMLANDS as an agricultural
company known to support local initiatives put up good sponsorship for the
breeders of each of the 4 age champions – these went to <st1:personname>Kim
Best</st1:personname> &amp; Molly Dillon for Mr Wiggle in the 4 year old
class; LC Horse Farm &amp; Steve Cohen for Scheweppes LC in the 5 year old;
Mount View Sport Horses with Richard &amp; Wendy Keddell for Annandale Branson
MVNZ for the 6 year old and NZ Performance Horses with Warrick Hansen for
Quality NZPH in the 7 year old championship.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The NRM Leading Breeder award based on points earned over
the show was shared between LC Horse Farm and Double J Stud with Wendy &amp;
Robyn Jacobs. The FERNHILL STUD Leading Rider also on points over the show was
Kyle Timm, the young Canadian rider who works with LC Horse Farm in <st1:city><st1:place>Auckland</st1:place></st1:city>
- the prize for Kyle &amp; LC Horse Farm was a free service to either Kiwi
Legacy (by Emillion) or Kiwi Gold II. Katie McVean was runner-up Leading Rider.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The Leading Sire for the second year running was Littorio, a
<st1:place>Holstein</st1:place> stallion based in the <st1:place>South Island</st1:place>
with Pico Bello in second place. The Leading Broodmare sire for the second year
running was Distelfink who stood at Longspring Stud with Rupert &amp; Anne
Vallance in the Wairarapa with Voltaire II in second place.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">ONE BLACK HORSE sponsored a special prize valued at close to
$500 for the best turnout on the day – the winner was Claudia Porter. Other
sponsors who generously provided funds to help the show included Melda
Gibson/Champions Sport Horse Stud, Barbara Thomson Photography, Pip McCarroll,
Kiwispan, Spot On Photography, STH Hay Supplies, Euro Sport Horses and Acre PC.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><st1:stockticker>FULL</st1:stockticker> RESULTS on the ESNZ
