It’s all Jingle Bells for Luci
Sunday, 8 December 2019

Lucinda Askin had a great weekend at Show Jumping Canterbury’s Christmas Cracker show, with the highlight being winning the POLi Payments/Kinloch Farms Horse Premier League class (1.40-1.60m) on her 15-year-old thoroughbred, Portofino.

The on-form pair also won the Horse A2 1.30-1.40m class on Saturday, and Luci also finished third in that class on Flying Dutchman DHU who went on to place second in the Tavern Harewood Mini Prix (1.35m) today. Luci also won the Horse Championship 1.25m class on Double J Cyclone and had placings on her other young horses I.Q. and Cascade on Friday.

Luci, from Ashburton, has a break from shows over Christmas, but says the horses will stay in full work as she is aiming for the National Show Jumping Championships which are on 16-19 January. She plans on lining up Portofino in the premier event and with over $12,000 worth of prize money and the coveted Rutherford Cup up for grabs in this top competition, Luci hopes her top form sticks around in the new year!

Johanna Wylaars was also in the prizegiving line-up on a frequent basis, and there were huge smiles when she received first prize in the Country TV / Saddlery Barn Pony Grand Prix on Wembleybrook Tiffany. The little pocket-rocket pony jumped so very well all show, even on Saturday when her rider was wearing a full Santa suit, complete with beard! Johanna is another one who will be keen to keep her form for the National Show early next year. The Christchurch teenager also won another class on Dingmac Disco King and had many other placings.

Another local rider having a great show was Katie Meredith. Riding Ngahiwi Double Cross, she won the Tavern Harewood Mini Prix, after two very good clear rounds and a great time in the jump off. The other two in the jump off were not able to replicate her clear round or get close to her time. Katie was also fifth in the same class with Westgrove GNZ after an unlucky rail in the first round.

Katie, from Christchurch, also did well in the show hunter arenas, including winning the Petticoat Lane Performance Horses Adult Equitation class. As well as riding five horses each day at the show, Katie was frequently helping out picking up rails in the arenas and walking courses with young riders.

Many of the show attendees from further south are now facing a longer stay in Canterbury with the road closures in South Canterbury and on the West Coast. There have been many offers of places to stay for the stranded horses, riders, supporters and officials and the National Equestrian Centre has also been generous with reduced camping charges for those riders wanting to stay on at the ground.
