Canterbury Showjumping Halloween Theme
Sunday, 27 October 2019

Show Jumping Canterbury held the first day of their first show of the season today at the National Equestrian Centre, McLeans Island, Christchurch.

The Labour Weekend Jumping Carnival had a Halloween theme, with some of the riders and horses adorned in all sorts of spooky outfits including some horses being painted up so they looked like skeletons!

The feature events were the Young Rider and Junior Rider as well as the Pro-Am and Amateur classes.

The FMG / Betavet Young Rider class had four combinations progressing to the jump-off, and the best dressed rider also had the best time. Molly Buist-Brown and Vali looked great and performed even better, and were the clear winners on a time of 45.80 and a clear jump-off round. Steffi Whittaker was second on On the Point Eve on a time of 49.26 with Caitlin Adams on Hammertime third also with a clear and a time of 55.97. Makenzie Causer and Finch Farm Lasall were fourth with a great time but four faults.

Molly has been on fire in these young rider classes this spring. “He’s done four shows so far this season and won three of the young rider classes and was placed in the other one.” The pair have been progressing slowly up the ranks over the last few years, impressing as they have developed, and Molly hopes to graduate to Grand Prix level next year. She has a full season planned ahead, with more events in Christchurch, Ashburton and then the Nationals on 16-19 January 2020. As to Vali liking his Halloween outfit, he just took it all in his stride. “He is so tolerant,” said Molly.

Vali’s full younger brother, Bellick ST won the opening event of the day ridden by Molly’s sister Rosa. The exciting six-year old horse really jumped well, also adorned in spooky paraphernalia. He too wasn’t phased by his outfit. “He may only be six, but he acts like he is 20,” said Rosa afterwards. She plans on targeting the junior rider classes and the six-year-old series throughout what is their first season together. The pair were placed third in today’s Junior Rider class.

The Equifibre and Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider class also had four through to the jump off, but it was Sophie Townsend and the cheeky Kingslea Kiwi who took out first place after a great clear jump-off round in a time of 41.26. Right behind her was Molly Moffat and Glenmark, on a time of 41.35. Rosa was third, on a great time of 38.18 but with four faults, and Margo Curtis and Flirtini should be pleased with their performance for fourth place.

Sophie is another who has the National Show Jumping Championships in her sights, and is especially aiming for the Junior Rider title there.

The Harrison Lane and TMS Equestrian Pro-Am class had a competitive field, with four producing clear rounds to go to a jump-off. Kirsty Sharapoff and Shoot the Breeze triumphed after jumping another clear round with an excellent time of 44.38, pipping Katie Meredith on Westgrove GNZ with their time of 45.11 also with a clear round. Kirstin Beaven (Dolly NZPH) and Lauren Buckley (Icey Storm) had to settle for third and fourth.

Kirsty was very pleased with her horse also known as ‘Merv’ especially as he had just come second in one of the major classes at the recent South Island Three Day Event. “He is so cool,” she said. “He loves jumping.” As to whether he prefers eventing to show jumping, Kirsty reckons he likes them both, although perhaps is not so fond of the dressage phase in eventing. Kirsty plans on doing more show jumping through the summer, and will be targeting the National Show Jumping Championships.

The Amateur class is always a good one to watch and today there were three producing clear rounds in the first round. In the jump-off, it was veteran Margaret Ridley and Tallaght who showed everyone how it should be done. She jumped a clear jump off in a time of 40.95, well ahead of second placed Sonia Mckerchar and Desire NZPH on their time of 43.64, also clear. Georgia Reid and Double J Escape also jumped clear but had to be happy with third on their time of 44.4.

Margaret was a popular winner, and said her horse was “a good pony for an old lady!” The Amateur class is a favourite of hers. “It is a good transition class, being between 1.10-1.20m. I’ve been around the blocks, so this is not my first win in this class,” she said. With the performance she put in, we won’t be surprised to see her lining up for more prizes in this class.

The ConcretePower Junior Amateur class came down to a jump off between two; Katie Gerrets (Domino) and Olivia Shinn (Ignition). It was Katie who produced the fastest clear round however, with a time of 38.9. Olivia’s time was 40.14.

“He is my favourite pony,” said Katie (from West Melton) afterwards. “I will be doing more junior classes on her and just want to have fun.” The Nationals in January is also on her radar.

The show continues tomorrow, with an 8am start for the Pony Mini-Prix followed by the Matthew Hanovarians 7 Year Old Series and the Country TV and Saddlery Barn’s Pony Grand Prix. The Tavern Harewood Horse Mini Grand Prix is going to be a great event to watch, and that will be followed by the Equissage / Kinlock Farms Horse Grand Prix.
