Lucy Turner Leads the National Young Rider class
Saturday, 12 October 2019

The leaderboard has had a big shake up at the South Island Three Day Event after the cross country phase today at McLeans Island, Christchurch.

Out of the 11 classes, only two riders and horses held on to their overnight lead from the dressage phase, both in the lower classes.

Lucy Turner, the National Young Rider title holder, has moved into the lead not only in the Young Rider class, but also in the Bates CCI3* on Astek Victor. The pair put in an exceptional round, and Lucy was very happy. “He was bloody good,” she said afterwards. “He just locked onto everything I pointed him at, he was awesome. It was especially satisfying as he hadn’t had the runs leading up to this event. I think I even rode him better than I usually do!”

Unfortunately for Vicky Browne-Cole, who has come down from Auckland for this event, a run-out towards the end of the course has meant she has slipped down the placings. “The horse was amazing, but the rider was an idiot,” she said. “I didn’t set her up properly and she didn’t even see the fence.” Other than that issue, the pair put in a very impressive looking performance on the rest of the course.

In the National Junior Rider championship class, Ella Morshuis has retained the leading position, after putting in a beautiful clear round on Word Famous. She has also hit the top of the leaderboard in the Ultimate Design and Renovation CCI2* class, which is run in conjunction with the Junior rider class. Molly Moffat also produced an accomplished round on Glenmark and is sitting in second to Ella in the Junior Rider, and 4th in the CCI2*.

There were no finishers in the CCI4* class unfortunately, thanks to a retirement and a fall. Lauren Enright and Tygra have taken the lead in the Hobson Horse Coaches and Motor Homes CCN1*.

The final veterinary inspection is on at 8am on Sunday morning, followed by the last phase, the show jumping to decide the winners and champions.
