RESULTS from 2019 SI One Day Event 4* Championships
Monday, 22 April 2019

Emily Cammock and Shaw Lee are the 2019 South Island One Day Event Champions at 4* level after an action-packed cross country today at the National Equestrian Centre, McLeans Island, Christchurch.

The tough course was too much for most of the competitors in the class, with just Emily (West Melton) and Amberley’s Giles Gormack finishing to be first and second.

Emily had a real life at the narrow fence coming into the second water, and incurred 15 faults for not jumping in between the two flags. She also added some time penalties but was far enough in front thanks to a good dressage score and just four faults in the show jumping, to keep Giles in second place. Giles and Lucero stormed around the cross country, and jumped clear, but did incur some time faults as well.

Emily agreed that it wasn’t the perfect round. “I am still very happy with him, despite that little glitch,” she said afterwards. “It was a tough track with lots of different questions and he had the answers.” The pair are now headed to the National Three Day Event at Taupo 10-12 May. Emily wasn’t selected to be part of the New Zealand team to compete against the visiting Australians. The riders had to nominate themselves for selection, and Emily didn’t put her name forward.

Emily also had a win on Golden Kiwi, her stunning palomino horse in the Hygain CCN95 class. “He was a bit spooky, but felt happy and was taking me to the jumps.”

The Carousel Equestrian CCI3* class was won by Lincoln’s Lucy Turner on Astek Victor who produced a very accomplished round today in the cross country. “Honestly, he felt awesome,” said Lucy. “He gave me a really good ride, he went straight and felt so confident. I am stoked!”

The pair have been selected on the long list for the New Zealand Young Rider team to compete against the Australians at Taupo. Lucy has to fly up to a selection camp next weekend, but has managed to talk the selectors into allowing her to leave her horse at home! “He will be coming up the week after, it was just too hard to get him up for next weekend.” Instead Astek Victor will travel up with Emily Cammock and her horses a week later.

Lauren Enright had a very successful weekend with her team of three horses, with two wins and a third prize. She took out the Dynavyte CCI2* class on Keepsake and the Hygain CCN95 Young Horse class on Beaumont Cash and was third in the Cover Queen’s CCN105 class on Tygra. “They are all going on holiday now,” Lauren said. She would love to have been able to compete at Taupo but unfortunately it is not to be this year. “I can’t afford to go. We are looking to sell Keepsake as well.”

The Cover Queen’s CCN105 class was won by Rebecca Smithey and Mr O Likely who is also heading to the holiday paddock. “I’ve going to take my baby horses out over the winter,” said Rebecca.

Molly Moffatt and Glenmark won the CCN105 under 21 class sponsored by Dunstan. Molly, who attends Kaiapoi Pony Club, is planning on competing at the pony club events that are on over the winter.

Another promising young rider is Prebbleton’s Jamie Atkinson and on Cluedo he won the Rangiora Equestrian Supplies CCN95 class. The combination have only been together a year. “He’s been out with an injury for a while too,” said Jamie. “He hasn’t done a lot of eventing, more show jumping, but I plan on taking him to the Rangiora Pony Club event shortly.”

Louise Poultney and Du Pablo won the Melwood Equestrian CCN80 under 21 class, leading after the dressage and never looking like relinquishing the lead. The Melwood CCN80 open class was won by Andrew Munro on Ed Harry, finishing on their dressage score.

One of the youngest riders in the event really impressed everyone this weekend. Grace Gormack had only ever done one other event on her pony Googleit, but they flew around and won the Ultimate Design & Renovation CCN65 class, against far more experienced riders.

Imogen Morrison on Ricker Ridge Mystery Man won the “Style” prize, sponsored by The Rider Shop.
