Sharapoff Shoots to the Lead
Saturday, 20 April 2019

The show jumping phase caused plenty of issues for the competitors in the South Island One Day Event championships at McLeans Island today. As a result, the leader boards after the dressage changed in most classes.

In the CCI4* class, Kirsty Sharapoff and Shoot the Breeze produced the only clear jumping round with just 0.4 time faults, so took over the lead from Emily Cammock and Shaw Lee who had the lead after the dressage but had one rail down in the jumping. As a result, Kirsty has a narrow lead going into tomorrow’s cross country phase.

“I was really pleased with how he jumped,” said Kirsty afterwards. “We had a great lesson with Andrew Scott last week and he was pinging then.” As to the cross country tomorrow, Kirsty is very impressed with how the course has been decorated and presented. “It is pretty cool, there are lots of questions in it and so it will be a good challenge. We will have to be on our game.”

In the Carousel Equestrian CCI3* class, once again there was only one clear round. Rangiora’s Cam Robertson on Wairoa Renegade made a great job of the tricky course and now has the lead going into tomorrow’s cross country. Leader after dressage, Brent Jury (Cust) on SE Gorky Park had two rails down, so dropped to third place, with Lincoln’s Lucy Turner on Astek Victor retaining her second place after dressage, despite dropping one rail.

Cam is really looking forward to the cross country. “I really like the course and she jumped really well today,” said Cam. “There’s a combination early on that may be a challenge, and all the fences are up to height. The water comes in quite early with a big fence to jump into it, so hopefully I will get her going straight away. I like the look of it, it should work well.”

The Dynavyte CCI2* class also had a change of leader. After the two phases Lauren Enright and Keepsake (Mosgiel) now have the lead, with Reefton’s Eve Hawes on Spookee Possum in second. Georgie Dickson on Tigerherz is now in third place. The leader after dressage, Annabelle Jones and Braxton Boy dropped out of the top few after having 12 faults in the show jumping.

Rebecca Smithey and Mr O Likely are leading the Cover Queen’s CCN105 from Anna Robertson on Valkyrie II with Lauren Enright on Tygra in third place. Lauren had led after the dressage. Lauren is also leading the Hygain CCN95 Young Horse competition on Beaumont Cash so had a good day with her team.

A clear round saw Emily Cammock and her impressive palomino, Golden Kiwi, take the lead in the Hygain CCN95 class, with Alison Sutton on Aquila Altair in second, and Andrew Munro on Brother Alec third.

In the Rangiora Equestrian Supplies CNC95 under 21 class, Jamie Atkinson and Cluedo retained their lead after dressage with a clear show jumping round. In the Dunstan CCN105 under 21, Molly Moffatt also lead after the dressage on Glenmark and her clear show jumping round sees her going into the cross country in the lead too. The Melwood Equestrian CCN80 Under 21 is being lead by Louise Poultney on Du Pablo.

The Melwood Equestrian CCN80 class has two riders in equal place. Andrew Munro (Ed Harry) and Brodie Roberts (Skyhi Sensei) have to share the honours at this stage. Tarryn Jones on Hez all That Jazz is third, and Tarryn is also third in the under 21 section on Ishipal, just behind Jaime Currie on SR Livingstone.

The Ultimate Design and Renovation CCN65 class sees Amberley’s Grace Gormack leading, riding her lovely pony Googleit. Yasmin De Groot is second on Teena with Claudia Faulkner on Blanc Shot in third place.
