22/09/2013 - Outram’s Janna McLeod has got the season away to a flying start, taking out the first Caledonian Amateur Rider of the southern jumping season at the Otago 1* Show Jumping Show at the Taieri Agricultural Park today.

Riding the 10-year-old cross bred gelding, Arthur Fonzerelli, McLeod, who is joint-master of the Central Otago Hunt Club, posted the only clear round of the 12-strong field to take an easy win ahead of Canterbury visitor Angus Taylor aboard Ngahiwi Wirey having jumped clear but picked up one agonising time fault. Palmertson’s Elizabeth Sheat finished third as the fastest of the four-faulters on Jemima Puddleduck, with Taylor fourth on his second ride Oak As.

The Telford Young Rider was a two-way tussle between Invercargill’s Nicole White and Canterbury’s Rose Alfeld, both with two rides apiece in the small class. With just the two clear rounds in the first round it came down to a jump-off against the clock. Out first, White had one rail down aboard Cricklewood Ace to stop the clock in 42.99. Alfeld tried hard with Capprera, but also had one down finishing slower to secure second. She finished third with her second ride My Super Nova, with White fourth on Flash Back.

Kristi Doherty (Glenorchy) sealed the KiwiSpan Junior Rider with a superb jump-off performance aboard Goldsmith. The show marked the long-awaited opening of the South Island jumping season, and was the first opportunity for combinations to secure points in the national series classes.
