Pick Me the Pick of the Bunch
Monday, 17 December 2012

Tim Myers was stoked to think he would be second in his second-ever FEI Bayer World Cup New Zealand League round at the FIBER FRESH Taupo Christmas Classic this afternoon.

But the best news was yet to come for the 19-year-old Hawera farrier, who took out the class aboard his 10-year-old showjumper Pick Me NZPH.

Leader Bernard Denton (Feilding) and Horsesports Suzuki – the only combination of the 13 starters to go clear in the opening round – were last to go in the second round and sitting on a clean slate. Myers had picked up four faults in his first round, but left everything up in the second, so was sitting on four faults.

But when two rails fell, Denton had to settle for second.

“I was quite happy to think we were going to be second,” said Myers.. “I’m just over the moon.”

It is very much a family affair in the Myers truck, with dad Bernie coach and advisor to his very talented son.

“I definitely believed he could win,” said the senior Myers.

Myers bought Pick Me NZPH three years ago from Tom Tarver-Priebe and opted to bypass the young rider classes to focus on the bigger league.

“It’s paying off,” said Myers, who finished fourth in his only other World Cup start.

Ross Smith (Canterbury) and his lovely stallion Quite Cassini were third with their eight faults, with Sam McIntosh (Cambridge) and her imported mare Estina fourth with 12 fault, all of which they had picked up in the first round.

A tricky treble line towards the end of the track proved problematic for many in the first round, which produced just a single clear round, however, five of the 11 combinations who cam back, left everything up in the second round.

Along with Myers, Smith and McIntosh, Katie McVean (Mystery Creek) and Dunstan Kiwi Iron Mark (owned by June Berrington) and young gun Luke Dee (Ocean Beach) and Ombudsman were also clear.

The big event rounded out three days of exciting jumping at the Fiber Fresh National Equestrian Centre, with the two star Taupo Derby tomorrow.
