First Day of Canterbury SJ & SH Championships
Saturday, 8 February 2020
Sophie Townsend won the Mainland Coachwork’s Canterbury Junior Rider series for the second year in a row with a perfect score of three-out-of-three wins after winning the Equifibre Junior Rider class today at the Canterbury Championships.
The 17-year-old from Darfield said she hadn’t been counting her wins this season. “He felt really good today. It is a nice run up to the South Island championships next weekend in Blenheim and then for the Horse of the Year show in March.”
It was a great competition, with seven combinations coming back for a jump off. Three of them jumped clear in the second round with very little between their times, with Sophie finishing in a time of 39.88 second, and Rosa Buist-Brown right behind her on 40.2, having to settle for second, and Pippa Collins third. Pippa also won the speed class this morning on Double J Barman.
The Betavet Young Rider Canterbury series was taken out by Molly Buist-Brown on Vali, after the pair finished fourth in today’s class, sponsored by FMG. Today’s final leg of the series was won by Olivia Harkerss of Kaikoura who was having her second-ever start in a young rider class. She was very happy with her 14-year-old Lacona Ammoe. “He is the only horse I have at the moment, and he had most of last season off due to injury.” They are off to the South Island Championships next weekend, and then are hoping to travel up to compete in the North Island.
There were three competitors in the jump-off for the Harrison Lane Pro-Am class, and it was Amy McMullan and her beautiful grey, Silversmith who won today’s class. Amy described her horse as “very cool.” The Equine Massage Therapist gives Silversmith weekly massages. “He loves it, and he has really earned one today,” she said. Silversmith is. By Centavos and is out of a pony called Exceptional who competed at Grand Prix Level. Amy is another hoping to head north to compete in her first-ever Horse of the Year Show later in the season. The TMS Equestrian’s Pro-Am Canterbury Series was won by Georgie Dormer on Casanova NZPH after her 7th placing today, adding to her good performances at the Labour Weekend carnival and the Christmas Cracker.
There were great entries in the show hunter section and the competition was of a very high standard, especially in the feature event, the Adrienne Cromie Memorial Trophy class. This was won by Georgia Allison riding Hokey Pokey. Georgia had finished second in this class last year. “It is really cool to win this class,” she said. “I knew Adrienne and I think it is awesome to recognise and remember her with this class and amazing trophy.” Georgia doesn’t have long left with her lovely Hokey Pokey as he will be going to his new owners in the North Island after the Horse of the Year show where Georgia will be competing him in both show hunter and the showing ring. Georgia herself is heading overseas then, and has a job lined up with the prestige Billy Stud run by William and Pippa Funnell.
Tomorrow is another early start at 8am, with the feature events being the Pony and Horse Grand Prix classes. Entry is free to spectators.
