NZ National Championship

NZ National Pro-Am title goes to Gisborne
Saturday, 18 January 2020

A nailbiting jump-off was required to determine the NZ National Pro-Amateur Champion today at the Tavendale & Partners National Show Jumping and Show Hunter Championship. Gisborne’s Larina Dolman made her trip worth while by taking out the title, riding Kiwi Lansing but she had to put in a brilliant performance to earn it.

Four combinations came through to the jump-off, and Harry Feast and Double J Bouncer set a scorching clear round in a time of 42.49. Jess Land and Emilio MSH jumped clear but were a bit slower than Harry, and then Morgan Baddeley set sail but while jumping clear, still couldn’t take the lead. Larina set off at a great rate and never let up, and really cut the corners, while jumping very well. Her time of 40.09 looked unbeatable, but Kirsty Sharapoff, who won this class two years ago, gave it her best shot. Her time of 42.31 was good enough for her to take second place, relegating Harry to third, Jess to fourth and Morgan to fifth.

Larina, who currently has the lead in the Harrison Lane national series, acknowledged it was a very good jump-off. “I had come all the way from the North Island so I thought I may as well make it worth it and give it all my best. We travel back on Monday and then will be competing at the Gisborne A & P show on Thursday or Friday.”

The Amateur class was also an excellent jump off, and it was the last combination to go who took the title. Both Kelly Evans and Hammertime are a well-known combination in southern show jumping circles, so it was a popular win. “He’s about 15 or 16 years old now, he’s been a fantastic horse, we are very lucky to have him,” said Kelly. “I had lots of support from the sideline with lots of great friends. I do this for the fun.”

There were no clear rounds in the Young Rider class so it was up to the two with four faults to jump off for the title. Wellington’s Sophie Scott and Lakota were first up, and had another rail, and West Coast’s Rebecca Wardle on her young horse, Dingmac Eccles wasn’t able to beat that, so the title went to Sophie, who won it last year as well. “He jumped really well,” said Sophie. “I am really happy with how he has been going all show. It wasn’t the best result to win on but a win is a win.”

Nelson’s Peita Milne won the National Junior Rider of the Year, riding Ngahiwi Warrior who she has had just over a year. “It has taken a while, but now we have a really good partnership,” said Peita. “I just love him to bits, I couldn’t ask for a better horse. Peita is intending aiming for Young Rider classes in the North Island.

Tegan Fitzsimon may have another superstar in her stables, with Campari. The pair won the National 7 year old title today. “He is owned by the Tapley family and I have been riding him since the end of his five year old season. He is a great horse, super scopey, and we have had a great season so far, although this is his first big win.” Tegan also plans on taking the horse up to the North Island for further competitions.

In the show hunter classes, Emily Barton and My Countess won the Brough Equestrian Amateur class, from Kate Mullins and Cowboy Cool. Grace Manera and Toulou won the Loan Goat Vineyard horse 1.10-1.15 class and Claudia Faulkner won the Tavendale & Partners Equitation Championship. The Zilco Junior Show hunter class was won by Rosa Buist-Brown on Bellick ST and the pair also won the McMillan Feeds Rising Star Hunter. The Lone Goat Handy Hunter Horse Championship was won by Gus Taylor and Orovet Li, with Tracy McIlraith on La Dama Vegas second and Sophie Rosanowski and Dark Ghana third. The Loan Goat open hunter 1m was won by Lucy Swain and Stone River Titan. The 90cm NRM Category C Pony class was won by Molly Smith.

It is final’s day on Sunday, with events getting started at 8.30am at the National Equestrian Centre, McLeans Island, Christchurch. The Horse Grand Prix will be the last event starting at approximately 2.30pm and we hope to have all the events finished by about 3pm. Entry is free for spectators, and there are some great food and refreshments stands available as well as trade stands.
