NRM National 3 Day Event CCI*** Championships
Sunday, 18 May 2014

Clarke Johnstone and Balmoral Sensation have won remarkable eventing title trifecta when he took out the NRM National Three Day Event Championship today in Taupo. In March this year he also won the Eventer of the Year title and the Kihikihi International Horse Trials.

Johnstone led this the Taupo event from whoa to go in what was a truly spectacular display of eventing. The combination jumped faultlessly in both cross country and show jumping, with just a few cross country time faults to add to their dressage score.

A solid performance by Waerenga’s Donna Smith on the impressive Balmoral Tangalooma saw them finishing in second place. The pair also show jumped cleanly and recorded the fastest cross country yesterday.

Waikato based Johnstone was full of praise for his horse. “Im so lucky to have such a beautiful horse and a team of great horses. He makes it easy for me. It was a great way to finish the season.” Johnstone has always acknowledged and been grateful to Donna Smith who produced this horse and rode it until the Johnstone family bought the horse.

Cambridge’s Kelsey Rothery and The Felon moved into third place after the show jumping phase due to Angela Lloyd and Song having three rails down. Lloyd ended up in fourth place with Fraser King on Nadal KSNZ 5th.

The Waikato winning streak continued in the Bates CCI** Championship when birthday girl, Diane Gilder, won the event. Like Johnstone, she lead through all three phases.

Wairarapa’s Amanda Pottinger had a great weekend, finishing second on Achilles II in the Bates CCI** and also winning the Fiber Fresh CCI* class on Just Kidding.
